INDIVIDUAL

For as long as I can remember, my bà ngoại (grandmother) struggled with a health system that failed to provide the type of culturally competent care that could have prevented the chronic medical conditions she still endures. This inspired me to be involved with healthcare - not only for her but also to better address the linguistic barriers and lack of cultural competency in the healthcare system that works against many in the Vietnamese community, as well as other misunderstood Southeast Asian communities. As an aspiring physician-activist, I hope to have a role much larger than treating the symptoms of my individual patients, where I am able to look further upstream at the bigger picture of minority health policy and health equity.
